Mini Sudoku for Kids

4×4 and 6×6 · no timer · no game over

Small, colourful puzzles that teach the rules of Sudoku in minutes. Perfect for children, classrooms and anyone new to the game.

How to play mini Sudoku

A mini Sudoku works exactly like the classic puzzle, just smaller. In a 4×4 grid, every row, every column and every 2×2 box must contain the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 — each one exactly once. Some numbers are already filled in; your job is to work out the rest.

  1. Tap an empty square to select it.
  2. Look along its row, down its column and around its box. Which numbers are missing?
  3. If only one number fits, tap it on the coloured keypad.
  4. Keep going until the whole grid is full. Stuck? Press Hint.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Start with 4×4 Easy and solve the first puzzle together, saying your reasoning out loud: “This row already has 1, 2 and 4, so this square must be 3.”
  • Let children make mistakes. A number that breaks a rule turns red, which turns every error into a small lesson rather than a failure.
  • Move to 6×6 when 4×4 feels easy. The jump in difficulty is gentle, and it prepares them for the full 9×9 game.
  • For screen-free practice, print a worksheet from our printable Sudoku generator.

Frequently asked questions

What age is 4×4 Sudoku good for?

Most children can enjoy 4×4 Sudoku from about age 5 or 6, as soon as they recognise the numbers 1 to 4. 6×6 suits ages 7 and up, or any beginner who finds the 9×9 board intimidating.

What are the rules of 4×4 Sudoku?

Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 2×2 box contains the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4 exactly once. In 6×6 Sudoku the boxes are 2 rows by 3 columns and you use the numbers 1 to 6.

Is there a timer or mistake limit?

No. Mini Sudoku is built for learning: there is no clock and no game over. Numbers that break a rule turn red straight away, and the Check button gently marks any answer that isn't right yet.

Can I print mini Sudoku puzzles?

Yes — our printable Sudoku generator makes PDF worksheets of 4×4 and 6×6 puzzles, with an answer key on the last page. Ideal for classrooms and car journeys.
